Kampala, 22 March, 2024 – Today, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and the Ministry of Water & Environment of Uganda signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further their partnership to anticipate and plan for climate mobility in the country. The MOU was signed in the margins of the 7th Uganda Water and Environment Week (UWEWK).
“The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks an important step for Uganda, showcasing our commitment to anticipating climate mobility & fostering people positive adaptation journeys,” said Alfred Okot Okidi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water and Environment.
Since last year, the GCCM and the Ministry of Water & Environment of Uganda have been collaborating on the Uganda Climate Mobility Deep Dive. The Deep Dive’s objective is to utilize information on climate mobility trends and local knowledge for the development of a national climate mobility blueprint to guide policy formulation and implementation.
During the Uganda Water and Environment Week, the GCCM and the Ministry of Water & Environment of Uganda also organized the side event “Climate Change, Climate Mobility, and Development Nexus in Uganda” to launch the Climate Mobility Blueprint for Uganda. The Blueprint is based on modeling projections by the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI), research findings, and the observations and recommendations shared by national and local stakeholders during five consultation workshops, held in November 2023.
“This launch is a major milestone in our work to support just community transition in Uganda by strengthening resilience and minimizing vulnerability in the face of frequent and severe climate events,” said Sarah Rosengaertner, Deputy Managing Director of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility. “We are honored to deepen and continue our partnership with the Government of Uganda to enable informed adaptation and mobility choices, whether people and communities decide to remain, to move or are in need of support to manage the arrival of newcomers.”
