New York, NY, 28 September 2024 – In front of 60,000 attendees at the Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park, Managing Director of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), Prof. Kamal Amakrane, announced a groundbreaking pledge to raise $100 million by 2030 for the Communities Climate Adaptation Facility (C-CAF). This innovative initiative aims to empower local communities in the Pacific, the Greater Caribbean, and Africa as they navigate climate impacts.
The C-CAF delivers quick-impact grants to vulnerable communities, giving them much-needed access to climate financing to strengthen their adaptive capacities and resilience. The GCCM, which facilitates these grants, works with regional and local partners to stay closely engaged with and support the implementation of each grant. Such efforts aim at promoting local agency and ownership, ensuring positive community transition amidst the climate crisis.
“We cannot dream of a just future without standing strong with the communities that are fighting today to protect their homes, their livelihoods, and their heritage,” said Kamal Amakrane on stage at Global Citizen.
The community grants focus on delivering concrete support for vulnerable populations, including basic services like water and sanitation, environment, health, housing, and workforce development. The grants can benefit populations that are isolated or have lost access to government services in areas exposed to climate risk, as well as communities moving or relocating due to climate impacts. Further, these grants support communities that welcome new arrivals so that they can successfully adapt and integrate into the local community and economy, contributing to its sustainable development. The grants will also focus on rehabilitating ecosystems, capacities or activities that are vital to the local economy, as well as preserving communities’ culture and heritage.
The C-CAF mobilises its funds from government, foundation, and private sector partnerships. The C-CAF implementation structure will leverage its global partnerships to ensure each grantee has access to relevant knowledge, data and analysis to assess and develop possible solutions.
